Act of Congress presides over evening show

The Jane B Holmes Public library of Helena recently hosted the bluegrass band, Act of Congress at an evening waterfront presentation in Joe Tucker Park. The stringed quartet is made up of Bethany Borg (violin/vocals), Tim Carroll (bass/vocals), Chris Griffin (guitar/Dobro/vocals) and Adam Wright(mandolin/guitar/vocals). Act of Congress expands the boundaries of acoustic music with an original style, drawing their rich sound from variety of styles consisting of bluegrass, jazz, and rock. They give a nod to the now dissolved bluegrass group, Nickel Creek, for being the inspiration to the group. Many people were on hand to hear the band showcase it's original tunes, many of them written by Wright.The set list of the evening included about 8 tunes, all original, with the exception to a 80's through back tune, "Take on Me" made famous by the one hit wonder group, A-Ha. The group even breathed some new life into the song with a light bluegrass edge. The groups excitement, such as it is, comes from the layered instrumental textures and the measured movement into climaxes of their songs that are majestic with the nuances of the group's singing and playing. In these respects, the singles, "I Disagree" (written by Wright and sound man, Corey Nolen) and "Five Minutes of Fame" (written by Wright) are most impressive and are at quite opposite ends of the lyrical spectrum. The group is said to be working on a CD in hopes of a fall release.The group's musical blend comes from seasoned talents by their own rights.Adam Wright earned an honorable mention in the John Lennon songwriting competition, and that talent is evident in the lyrics of his songs. Bethany Borg is an exceptional fiddler. Borg is a state champion in six states and has been named in the nations top ten fiddler on two occasions. Her fiddle playing and vocals add a richness to the tunes played. Tim Carrol has played with the notable likes of the regional symphony as well as the Huntsville Symphony. Chris Griffin is involved in music at two local churches and also teaches guitar out of his home. Act of Congress also has a new relationship with Live Nation. They will be featured in the "VIP" areas at the Verizon Music Center at many large concert venues. You can also catch them playing in other music venues throughout the area. Busy, Lazy Weekends....a Contradiction?

On Friday, I was so glad to see some rain (which might have been the issuance of my bad cold that evening, go figure with upper 70's temps, then rain, now briskly cool). Big Daddy took the day off on Friday to wrap up some business. We went and had lunch at Papa Saias with my mom and dad. I questioned the real reasoning for Big Daddy's off day as I found out the his favorite hot wing stop has an all you can eat hot wing buffet. "14 Flavors!", Big Daddy proudly boasted. As if I was impressed. He fought his way through the buffet line with a long line of police officers, power & cable guys, city workers-even some folks from the local television station 33/40 (my cousin, Gina included). It seems the word on the buffet has hit the street. LOL!
After lunch my mom and I hit the thrift store. I found some great buys....
This brand new white coverlet in a queen size. It is the Hotel Luxury Bedding label. It was $15.00. A steal! I will be using this on one of my beds at home, for sure!



And this vintage print of what looks to be peonies. It's very shabby sheek. I paid $24.00 for it. More than I would normally at the thrift store, but anywhere else would have been more than double. It is a large size print, about 2' by 3'. And the frame is gorgeous. It is very old, as evident in the papered backside, but no one will see that side. It's age adds to it's charm!



I also got an armful of decorating magazines. I refuse to buy magazines at the store anymore. I used to subscribe to People, Southern Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Coastal Living and Country Music Weekly, to name a few. I have allowed every one of my subscriptions to run out. I couldn't rationalize a renew when I can buy the same ones at 3 for a dollar at the thrift store.




I picked up some Portico on this trip. Portico is a local publication. A very well done magazine I will say. I was so excited to see one of my favorite local bands on the cover, Act of Congress. From a reporter to a fan, I am very interested in their music. It was a nice article on them. And while I am on the subject of Act of Congress, they have a new CD out. It was a busy weekend, though I woke up on Saturday morning with a terrible sore throat. I felt every bit of lousy. I had to ask Big Daddy to step in with the chauffeuring of kids. I couldn't have picked a better Saturday to be sick. It was good for him to really get a jest what any given day of mine as a stay at home mom is like. He carted kids to and from birthday parties (Happy B'day R&J!) then to cheer leading practise. He took care of lunch and errands to the bank.

It was quite nice. All this while I laid out on the sofa with my puppies, slept and read my "new magazines" and watched some TV.

CAN I GET A BIG ROLL TIDE on the football game on Saturday. BAMA against LSU! ROLL TIDE, BAY-BEE!

True, it might appear that I had it all planned out, but I didn't. despite what Big Daddy might think. I do appreciate his helping me out. I couldn't have done it without him.

I was like this much of Saturday....


It only makes me realize that I need to take more of my "sick days" that are due to me.

Sunday I felt a good bit better. I needed to be so that I could yell (really loud) for my daughter's and my friend Boss' squad's at the cheer competition.

The weekend flew by way to quickly....but for now, another work week ahead. The piles of laundry and dishes didn't wash themselves. It awaits me.

Saturday Stuff

A Dusting of Sugar

A little, and I do mean *little*snow on the ground this morning, as if you dusted a pound cake with confectioners sugar. The kids went onto the deck and played....where the snow had accumulated the most. They gathered every little bit of snow they could scrape up off the deck railing and made the worlds most pitiful snowballs. But it made them happy. Hot chocolate was ordered up and the world was good. Because we got a dusting of snow. In a kids eyes-those that rarely see it-it counts.

Going to the Chapel

Going to the Chapel today......Bama's Tennis Coach is getting married. I am so upset that I don't have my camera. For the past two years Big Daddy and I have copulated together and produced a musical slide show of pictures taken throughout the tennis season. This year would not be complete if I didn't include his coach, April in her wedding gown, with her boys (usually sweaty and always in shorts) in their Sunday best. And today, I will not capture it. So sad. So terribly sad. Speaking of Bama. Rest easy Alabama drivers, his car privileges were stripped when he brought home a speeding ticket on Friday. I cannot go there (to discuss) or I will blow my top. Rest assured he isn't on the road-not until he has completed driving school.

**UPDATE!!-The wedding was beautiful. I asked a parent to take the shots I wanted. She promised me copies. Also, April had asked me for a recommendation for a wedding photographer prior to the big day. I recommended Erin and Corey Nolen of Nolen Photography. I met Corey briefly at the Act of Congress show in Helena, he was the sound guy there. I had asked him a couple questions for the article I wrote. I got his web site from the Act of Congress web site and was impressed with he and Erin's work. There are alot of photographer's I know that just do not want to fool with weddings for liability reasons, so I was happy to see that they did weddings. At the wedding, I was certain to get the shot I wanted by asking the Nolen's to shoot it. They did. I cannot wait to see how it turns out!

Human Body Forms

I was in Sam's on Thursday purchasing snacks for Bama's tennis team. I strolled by the swimsuit isle. Depressing to even think about and even say the word. But I stopped, because I saw the price...$21.00. I flipped through the swimsuits that were hanging on the "human torso plastic forms". I found one I liked and I got it. I took it home and tried it on....it was almost acceptable, which on this ole bod is a keeper. Nothing much rates above that these days. It covered sufficiently.
I put the torso form that the bathing suit was hanging on by the trash in the kitchen so Bama would take it out when he took out trash. That evening, he went to take out trash. I was in there cleaning up the dishes from supper. "Whhhaaaattt-T! The Heck is THAT!" he asked, looking at the form. He looked at me. The confusion on his face...I lost it and couldn't answer his question. His face said it all. Certainly, he thought his parents were into some kind of kinky seedy world that involved plastic bathing suit forms. Sledge came into see what all the fuss was about. She too looked at the form. "What is that?" she asked with every bit of curiosity in her voice. "It's a bathing suit form-what the swimsuit was hanging on when I bought it!" I explained. "That's weird!!!" Sledge stated. Bama agreed. And all life in the circus was back to "normal"-for a little while.......

Saturday on Buck Creek

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I did. It was busy, but fun filled. On Friday night my friend Kym called me to tell me that she had gotten engaged!! I have posted on Kym before, in a song that I wrote. I am really happy for her and glad that she seems to finally been dealt a nice card for a change in Rick. We, by that I mean "the girlfriend gang", are all looking forward to a future wedding and we have all offered to do what we can to see it happen. Flo has offered her home as a wedding location and I told Kym to consider my photography services as a wedding gift. I would be honored to capture those moments. It will give us much to talk about when we head down to the beach for a girls getaway long weekend later this week. It cannot come soon enough. Congratulations Kym and Rick!! On Saturday morning the circus and I headed down to the Buck Creek Festival. I have lived in Helena for 9 years and had yet to attended. Every single year something came up. But this year, I got lucky! What a fabulous day! While the weather was very humid and the rain did hold out until around midnight Sunday morning, long after the festival wrapped-unlike last year, it was enjoyable. As we headed to the entrance of the festival I was stopped by the sweetest lady, Laura Lynn Love, who introduced herself and her mother to me. Laura and her mother run Loading Docks South in Helena. I told Laura that I am going to HAVE to make it down to Loading Dock South to look around. It's one of the many things I think to myself as I drive through old town running errands, "when I have time I am going to go by there". I think that is the mentality of allot of people in Helena. While people don't mean any wrong in it, it is probably one reason why so many businesses in Helena close. We need to support our own! I am definitely going to swing by real soon and am ashamed I haven't yet. Loading Docks South sells home and building closeouts. If you plan to stop by, do check their web site for store hours. Hewy, she did mention the Waffle House rug. I agree that it would've made a good piece of dinner table conversation for guest to your home. I love a surprise element in a room and that certinaly would've been one!

After I said good bye to the sweet "dock" ladies we went on inside the festival. We arrived in time for the kids and Big Daddy to get a bite to eat. I took the opportunity to hunt down Kym to congratulate her in person. She was beaming almost as much as the new diamond on her finger.

Soon enough, the circus found me and we went and copped a squat in front of the stage awaiting Act of Congress. I did get to listen briefly to the band that preceded AOC, they were called Infinite Youth. I was very impressed at these two young boys rocking it up there with no inhibitions. They had a great sound reminiscent of some hair bands of my hey day. They have a new CD out. To hear some of their music, check out their web site.

11:00AM! Time for Act of Congress to take the Stage. I told Chris (the guitarist) that AOC was my main reason for coming. I am always interested in checking out new bands, but as mentioned many times before, I love AOC. I first heard them when I was on a job to write a music review for a local newspaper, I walked away a fan of their music. I love what they do, the unique sound that they have, it just leaves you with a happy outlook on the day. I did get a brief video of them live at the festival that I will post. They also have a new CD coming out in June. Currently they are selling their demo CD for 5 bucks (a bargain!). You can check out their web site as well for song demos and to purchase CD's.

After AOC we decided to muddle around and check out the local vendors at the festival. I must say, I love that part. When I was helping to orchestrate Kid Fest for WHIM, I loved meeting the vendors and checking out what they had brought with them. I loved getting to know different people. It took me back and made me realize, I am an idiot for not being involved in this festival. (actually I did send an email early in the year but didn't get a follow up email on what I could do to help). I am vowing here, that next year I will do my part. As a volunteer, you just get so much out of it and it is really great to give back and to be involved in your community. It's something that I preach constantly to my kids. If we as parents do not live by example then we really have no right to moan when our children become lazy, uninvolved and careless of situations in their world.

The Buck Creek Festival vendor row had something for everyone, from live animals (I am proud to say that I did not come home with a turtle, lizard, dog or the such! Hurray!) to demonstrations to arts and crafts. I finally got to meet the talented Paul Samsom in person. He is the gifted photographer that I mentioned here some months ago. I had emailed Paul regarding a few photos that I was interested in. He was ever so gracious in offering information that some photographers may not be as forthcoming to another photographer about, such a locations, and even suggested who to should talk to about getting my own photography put up in some places etc. Big Daddy bought me a piece from hPaul's collection at the festival, it was my "Mother's Day gift". I will certainly treasure it. It is a picture of Old Town Helena from long ago. I love it because old town Helena today still looks very much the same. If you aren't familiar with Paul and his award winning photography, I recommend stopping by his web site. I already have a wish list for my husband for any future purchases he might decide I am worthy of.

There was much to do at the festival, beside eating, checking out bands (that in itself is enough) but with the many vendors, demonstrations, a kids area with inflatable rides and activities and even a war reenactment that the kids really enjoyed.

I also ran into Tom Lefebvre. If you don't live in Helena, Tom was a recent member of the city council, though he recently announced his intent to keep his position. Tom and I began talking about the city of Helena's history. I mentioned to him something that I have mentioned before to "Major Dundee", that the city really should have a historical society. Tom said that there is a non official one, though I think there needs to be one of an official nature to receive funding to preserve/restore what we do have. For example the coke ovens that sit on the banks of the Cahaba River. I am looking forward to a future walk with Tom and co. to show me the locations. I have known that they were back there, but have been to chicken to go out and explore on my own and of course I wouldn't know the great stories that I anticipate I will hear.

We met up with our friends the Young's (with boyfriends in tow) shortly before we we left the festival. Actually they were coming as we were going. We were in a hurry to leave because they were to come over to our house later that day to grill out-3:30. They did and it capped off a most lovely (humid) day.

I must say to all that were a part of putting on this years festival (from someone who knows firsthand the dedication, long hours and hard work it takes to do it) GREAT JOB! Your hard work was evident in how smoothly everything ran. Congratulations to you all and thank you for your efforts. A good time was had by all!

My Christmas Wrap

It went as quickly as it came....Christmas. All in my house this year were overcompensated by Santa and richly blessed by the Lord. The kids were excited to get the Wii. Even I, who am NOT a computerized game lover, actually highly enjoyed playing it. It will be a game that our entire family can and will play together. I really didn't even know what a Wii was when I was searching for one, only to know it was a game system. I am very impressed with the technology of being an interactive game, in the way of actually acting out roles. Pretty cool. I am already wanting the guitar hero version. My son, Bama and his friends came over one night with the playstation version and gave me quick lesson and I loved it. I got to live out my own fantasies that night, to the embarrassment of my children.
Big Daddy really liked his Samford Hall/Auburn painting I made for him. Bama equally loved the Denny Chimes one his grandmother made him. Big Daddy had asked for a big obnoxious orange jersey that he could wear (to of all places!) work and at home-to which he received. Sister Sledge got a guitar. The next thing on the agenda is to get her guitar lessons, preferably from the highly talented Chris Griffin of Act of Congress. I was thrilled when he told me that he is a teacher of guitar. J Smooth got enough plastic swords and shields, and knight and pirate paraphernalia to command even the biggest of ships and take on the biggest of army's. He also got an electronic drum kit. For Bama, with the family band theme, he was not be left out! As he received both a triangle and a tambourine (wink). LOL! He also got plenty of U of Alabama merchandise as well as basketball tickets. I received a large jewelry box, you know, the ones that stand like a piece of furniture. It was my request. I have no jewelry of real value, as most of it is costume-I require nothing of great monetary worth as I could care less if it is real or not, but it was imperative to me that there was a better organizational system. I am thrilled to have gotten it. I got some other nice things, Big Daddy and the circus are always so kind and go out together on a particular night and shop solely for me. I find it so kind and thoughtful.
There was a great feast at my mother's house, many came...my bother and sister in law and their children, my aunt, uncle and cousin from Gadsden, my husbands family from Tuscaloosa, my sister in law's parents from Childersburg, cousins from Atlanta, friends... it was wonderful. That is one crowd I do love! I always am happy to see a houseful of loved ones.
I gave Big Daddy an 80's "Name that Tune" game DVD that everyone seemed to enjoy playing. The girl cousins all got Hannah Montana wigs & microphones from my parents so their day was spent fantasizing what it would be like to be in Hannah's shoes. The boy cousins were roped into playing the male roles on the TV show It was funny to watch.
My aunt Wanda gave all of the women aprons. We made our picture wearing them. The kindness of giving was generous, as even my brother in law had specially picked out something for me, a gorgeous decoration that I had admired on his Christmas tree at his home last weekend. He went and purchased me my own version. Of course, my parents went above and beyond, as they do each year. They are always certain to see that we have adequate to open. I needn't open a thing to feel there love, but my mother in particular frets over having "enough' for everyone. She is so thoughtful in that way. They are generous people.
It was a wonderful Christmas! But what I think of most, is the gift of Christ. I lay awake in bed last night enveloped in His love. And I still cannot, in my small brain, comprehend the love he has for all of us. As a parent I have a good idea, though the true love of the Lord cannot saturate my mind for it is so strong and big and beyond the Heaven's. What I do know is, I AM BLESSED!
So, here we are on "the day after" when my chore of sorting and organizing begins. All the toys, the food, the decorations, cards, someplace to put it all. So, the day before me will be on of much labor as I drive into what could potentially be a never ending can of worms. There is much to do and little time to accomplish it all. At this point the consideration of renting a bulldozer is a thought...

Buck Creek Festival 2009 and a surprise visit by Bo Bice

With temperatures feeling like early July, there couldn't be a better way to kick off that summer time feel than with a great outdoor concert---or a few! This past weekend my hometown of Helena celebrated the annual Buck Creek Festival in great style. The two day event drew thousands to the banks of Buck Creek to watch the rubber duck race, to shop arts and crafts vendors and play in the fun children's area. But it was the ten bands that were the main draw. The musical choices range from classic rock to bluegrass gospel.

The band Cuttin' Loose kicked off the festival on Friday night with classic favorites across a wide variety of musical genres. They were followed by the band Five-O, which had almost everyone in the crowd on their feet singing and dancing, including this girl, with a mix of classic rock songs with a couple country thrown into the mix.

Saturday brought out eight more bands, including the highly touted (here on my blog) Act of Congress. Such a talented group!! But it was a special surprise by a former American Idol contestant, local celebrity and all around great guy, Bo Bice, that had the crowd up and dancing on Saturday evening. The four piece country band, Deputy Five , was more than happy to welcome Bo onto the stage for a couple tunes. Bo dedicated one of favorite Skynyrd songs, Sweet Home Alabama, to his friend Ean Evans. Ean was the bassist of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Evans, a close friend of Bice, lost his battle to cancer this past week. The heated temperatures and excitement of the crowd came to a peak with the performance of the southern rock anthem.

Speaking of Bo, I had a chance to speak with him for a little while. I can tease that there will be at least a couple fun events that will include Bo and his hometown of Helena. While I am not at liberty to say right now, I can promise that details are soon to come.

I want to give Kudos to a few people for putting on another great festival. There are many fine volunteers that get the festival together each year, so forgive me for leaving people out, I am just naming some folks that I personally know that had a hand in making the magic happen and those folks are Festival Chairman- Jim Wathen, Council Woman -Cris Nelson, my all time favorite weatherman- Brian Peter's, Major Dundee, The Helena Police Department, The 10 Great Bands, Bo and Caroline Bice, Randy Perrin, State Representative and my friend Cam Ward, The great sponsors, area churches for free water, fans, and use of space.

Finally a special thanks to my dear, dear friend Judy Ellington at The Monkey Basket for serving up some great appetizers, great music by the Overall's and some mighty fine mojito's on her patio. It was a great weekend! I saw alot of good friends having good times down there-and that's what it's all about. Fun! I look forward to doing it all again next year!

Finally a teaser, that was thrown my way by Bo Bice. You all know my love of music trivia? Bice had me stumped at some trivia as we chatted at the coffee shop over this question. In the song, Sweet Home Alabama, there is a tag line at the end of song that some think is a cuss word. But it isn't. What is the line? I will just say, I failed and missed out on an opportunity to score and easy $50.00 from Bo. I don't have $50.00 but I challenge anyone to give me the correct answer, just for fun! How about a Happy Hour Drink from Sonic on me? I will mail the first person with the correct answer a gift card for a"Drink on Leigh", just like that old AC/DC song sings about.

Coffee Talk

Rush Week

It is getting closer and closer. My freedom, as I know it will soon come to an end-at least for a couple weeks. The children will have their respective class parties on Tuesday and Wednesday. My oldest is finishing up the last of his exams (in which we are praying).
This past weekend I took the last of my scheduled portraits, presumably they will be used in Christmas cards. All seemed happy. I hope to update my web site with newer and fresher portraits. I will have to work on Big Daddy over the holidays to help me in doing that. In the meantime, I posted a slideshow below, of some of the fun momnets in photographing these sweet families. I have meet some of the most wonderful people through photography.
I will be meeting later this week with Paul Zimmerman, who is helping to organize the first Celtic Festival in Helena. I will be partnering up with Courtney Claridy, who I worked with in preparing Whim's Kid Fest. We will have a newbie on board in Vallie Pate, who will certainly bring in some fresh ideas. Courtney is the consummate professional and also has such great ideas. I am anxious to see how things progress and will give an update. All I can visualize right now are men in skirts, Guinness beer and bagpipes. I do have an announcement regarding the festival, Act of Congress, the band I have been touting here on my blog, will be playing. I am stoked about that. Will provide more info as I become more informed and the stars line up........
On Friday I am looking forward to a movie and pizza night at my brother in laws home in Tuscaloosa. It seems there has been something everyday going on, but I love this part of the season, the celebration of Christmas and the social interaction between friends and family. I may not have 2 nickels to rub together sometimes (because Big Daddy is a tightwad and horder, but that's another story)but I am incredibly rich in what matters most, relationships with those I love. My friends and family are priceless to me.
Speaking of togetherness, as I say how much I am looking forward to it, I can say that I am NOT looking forward to the foreseeable fights and white trash fisticuffs that will also come with the season. This would involve my children. Lord give me patience to tolerate and find adequate ways to enforce control.
Lucy and Jeff's puppies are growing so fat and so fast. On Saturday they will be three weeks old. I will post a picture very soon. I have a home promised to almost all of them. That is good news. I am happy that I will be able to follow their lives in the homes they will be placed. A funny thing, I have tried not to become to attached and close to these puppies. I don't want to become sad in the inevitable thought of them leaving. I have not given any of them names for this reason. However, Big Daddy told me last night that he has named them all......Lawnmower, Dryer, Front Door, Back Door, Christmas Budget and vacation. These are things that we have had to shell money out for in the past week. On Friday it was a lawnmower. Big Daddy and Bama did not put oil in it and thus burnt out the engine. DUMB. It was about a year old, if that. A costly mistake for Big Daddy. On Saturday it was the dryer that started making a horrible noise. It too was not very old, 2-3 years. But Big Daddy began crunching numbers and found it would cost him less to buy a new one rather than call a repairman to fix it. Last week we had new doors installed on our home. Thus, these are some of the reasons the puppies are named so. It looks like the puppies will be helping to pay for some of these cost.....It's always something isn't it?
Christmas is only days away. I hope that everyone has gotten all of their shopping under wraps (literally).
Lastly, Happy Birthday to my friend Kym Jordan who is turned the 4-0 yesterday. You wear it well. If that is "how a pirate looks at 40", I can't wait to get there!

Erin and Corey, of Nolen Photography- I met Corey when I did a story for the Helena City News on the band Act of Congress (the story is on my blog under music reviews). Corey was running the bands sound, so during an intermission I would get info relating to the band. As it turns out, Corey is also a photographer. He and beautiful wife, Erin both are. They make a great team. They operate Nolen Photography. Their photography stands alone. They have such a unique eye, the capture a moment it seems as though the world has stood still. Both Corey and Erin have separate blogs that showcases their photography, in addition to their web site. I will have an entire post dedicated to Erin and Corey and their great talent very soon.


This is Trina, from Fabulously Frugalicious! - I met Trina through the Spring Fashion Fiesta. And remember the 97 cent t-shirt. It was "Frugalicious Trina" that found that steal. Trina is just a dear. Like me, she lives in Alabama. She is a mother, wife, budget keeper, and good Christian woman. And she is just precious. She recently took a trip to Wright's Dairy Farm. You can read about her trip here.

For the love a mamas mantra - Mama does not have her picture on the blog! For the life of me I do not know how I stumbled onto For the Love's blog. I think it was by way of the Dear Mrs. Schmitty. But I do remember the exact story that reeled me in, it was this one. And each one that came after. I was hooked. I sent it to my friends. I laughed to hard. Love has such a way with writing, and she always leaves you laughing out loud. She is a riot. Mom to three precocious children, they are often the subject of her stories, though not always. It's Love's outlook on the world. Kind of like a Seinfeld episode. She post what we all are thinking. When I think of For the Love, I think of laughter.

I, Wright -Trickie Nickie as I call her. Nickie is another who has a way of delivering a line that promises a smile and most often laughter. She has covered poop (or actually been covered in it, complete with photos), taken a 22 hour bus trip to Mexico with "2 gay guys named Juan", does not like to talk about sex (I agree some things should be kept private), Hides from Jehovah's Witnesses and will preach to all the will listen a truth she learned the hard way...Mace is for faces. I just Heart Nickie. But just a suggestion before you and pay a visit to TN, ....go pee first or you are bound to have an embarrasssing moment. After you catch up with TN on her "real blog" check her out on her cooking blog, it IS Downright Tasty!

American Idol Live Blog cast-Movie Theme Songs

American Idol Live Blogcast, Tonight's selections are songs of cinema with guest Quintin Tarentino. If you are tuning into the live broadcast, just click refresh after each contestant.
This week should be a good one. I like all the remaining contestants, with my favorites being Allison and Kris. I also am a fan of Danny.

1. Allison is singing Aerosmith's-"I Don't Want to Close My Eyes"-First stanza was more of a whisper than song, but now that she has hit the chorus she is strong vocally. I thought it was a good song choice for her. "Props" to my girl!

2. Anoop is singing "Everything I do, I do For you " by Bryan Adams. I Liked Anoop's version. Beleivable. He sang it with conviction. Soulful. I actually preferred Noops to the original. Anoop's was more soulful than sappy."Nooooooop!"

3. Adam is singing "Born to be Wild" by Easy Rider.-Each week Adam reminds me of someone different-Elvis, Kurt Russel, Eddie Munster...this week it is the lead for The Cult. IN appearances. And a bit vocally too. Its a fast paced up tempo, yet fierce song. As with the different persona's each week, I change week to week if I like him or not. This week I do. I really do. Wow! That was FIERCE!!! That's all I can say. And funny because usually I agree with Simon but this season in regards to Adam, I am not. I HATED last week, he gave it a standing O, tonight I liked it. But it had that hairband sound that I am drawn to.

(looks like Kristin and I are not in agreement with Adam this week. I can say usually I am not a fan, but I liked this one. I do love Allison, like you do Derek. I love her raspiness in her voice.)
4. Matt is up next. He is singing "Have you Ever Loved a Woman" by Bryan Adams (Don Won DeMarco). Once again, I tend to think Bryan Adams is a bit to sappy for me. I would like to see Matt shake the song up a bit and see him change the arrangement a bit more. It was a good performance, but for me it was not a stand out of his. He stayed pretty much as Bryan Adams. I wasn't overly impressed with his performance tonight.

-going to commercial, Danny is on deck. Derek, I agree with your comment. I am a fan if Matt, but tonight, he was not a standout. And yes...this must be the year of the piano man. But I like to see folks playing an instrument in addition to using their voice.

5. Danny is preparing to sing Endless Love by Lionel Richie. He isn't changing it up to much, but I like it. Oh, that note was to high......ok better.....I love the gravely in his voice. It was good vocals, but I don't think it was a standout of the night. I wish I could've seen Danny give it more soulful.

Derek, I am impressed that you play piano. I wish I could. I have a couple guitars that I peck around on. I hope to get some lessons one day when life slows down some. My daughter also has a guitar maybe when she starts playing well, she can teach me.
I didn't mind the harp either, I do wish he had added some more of his own flavor to the song.

6. Kris- Is singing Falling Slowly. I am not familiar with this song. Oh, I hear several bad notes. Shoot. Ya know, he sounds much like Jason Castro tonight. I didn't like the song, maybe because I wasn't familiar? And you know I like Kris. He is the dark horse to me. I didn't enjoy it.

Commercial break... Oh, Derek, I like fiddle too. If you ever want to learn, look up Bethany. She is the fiddler with Act of Congress (.com). She gives lessons and is amazingly talented. Kristin , you and Derek liked the song by Kris. I just couldn't dig it I guess because I didn't know it it didn't resonate with me. I did hear some pitch problems.

7. Lil is singing The Rose by Bette Midler. Wow! Ambitious! Let's see how she does....the first verse was a bit shaky...but now she has given it a gospel undertone in the second verse. I like that she is doing a little something different with it. But still, I am hearing some pitch problems.
Ambitious, yes, but I don't think it takes the prize tonight.

Derek and Kristin , I agree with both of you on Lil. Derek, I think you said it best that her rose wilted.

I know this isn't a Dancing with the Stars post, but I have not been true this year in my post for it. As I turn the channel to DWTS, I just have to say WOW. Guiles rocks. And poor Ty could be in trouble. Looks like this might be his last rodeo as far as the dance floor goes. Also in trouble, Steve O, who I would personally vote to leave.
