Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum

Last week I was discussing thrifty beach vacations, but as I mentioned also, the ideas mentioned are not exclusive to the gulf coast. I hope that you will take a moment and look into your own "backyard", if you will, of things that are available in your area.
That being said, another activity that we took advantage of while on our beach vacation with the children was the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum, not far from the Alabama gulf coast. It was perfect for a rainy day activity. The museum is free of charge and houses a wealth of information of our nations history as well as military history.
The National Naval Aviation Museum is the largest Naval Aviation museum in the world and one of the most visited museums in the state of Florida. Share the excitement of Naval Aviation's rich history and see more than 150 beautifully restored aircraft representing Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Aviation. These historic and one-of-a-kind aircraft are displayed both inside the Museum's nearly 300,000 square feet of exhibit space and outside on its 37-acre grounds.
Kids and Adults alike, will enjoy the "adventure" of the Flight Simulators. Also be sure to check out the Naval Aviation Memorial Theatre and catch all the drama and power of the amazing IMAX films.
There's so much to see and do, you'll want to stay all day! Admission is free! There is a cafe in the museum. Hours of operation are 9:00am to 5:00pm, seven days a week, 362 days each year, except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

As a side note, if you live in central Alabama, be sure to check out the Blue Angles Show at the Tuscaloosa Airport this weekend. Tuscaloosa Regional Airport is to host Blue Angels air shows April 4-5, 2009. If you have never seen the Blue Angles, I highly recommend going. It's a great show, one that will entertain adults as well as children.

Weekend Freebies & One Recall

My friend Zinnia mentioned to me a sample giveaway at Walmart, I thought I would pass the word along:

Free Samples Saturday at Walmart
Walmart is hosting an All You event called "Yes, You Can!" this Saturday OR Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. You need to look-up your closest participating Walmart location to find out which day they are hosting this FreebiEvent. They promise to have lots of free samples to pass out. Most likely samples will be from the sponsors which include Suave, Smart Ones, Weight Watchers Cheese, Emergen-C, Carefree, and Crisco. Even though all locations are supposed to be participating, I encourage you to call your local Walmart before heading out for a special trip.

FYI
I checked the stores in Alabama and the ones I saw participating are the ones on Hwy 150, Lakeshore, Trussville and the Hwy 280 (Hoover) Walmart; with the exception of the 280 store (Sunday) the others are doing their promotion on Saturday October 25.

For some really GREAT freebies:
Monday is also the start of a bloggy carnival giveaway! I love the giveaway. You are bound to win a great prize and discover some wonderful new blogs in the process!

Finally, a recall of interest with this being Halloween week:
This is true according to snopes:With Halloween fast approaching comes a warning to parents and kids regarding Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold milk chocolate coins imported from China. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to eat, distribute or sell the candy. It is sold across Canada by Costco and may also have been sold in bulk packages or as individual pieces at various dollar and bulk stores. The chocolate contains melamine which is the same chemical responsible for killing several babies in China, and sickening thousands more.

Have a great weekend!

Safety Classes

If you live in the area, there is a few classes that are going on that I wanted to mention. Safety classes. There are classes for children and also some for ladies. I think it is a fabulous idea. With Summer being here, it is a perfect time to revisit safety with children.

Officer Weaver of the Alabaster Police department is teaching the classes. All classes are being held at Meadowview Elementary School in Alabaster.

There are two weeks of kids classes. Classes are one week in length, but the option of two weeks is available for scheduling.
Kids classes are June 23-27th and June 16-20th
please call regarding times. Children will be separated by age group.

Officer Weaver is also conducting a Women's Safety Class, again, offering the same class on two separate weeks.
Week One is July 7-10th
week Two is July 14-17

There is also two times offered on both of those weeks. Either 1-4 PM or 6-9PM
Again classes will be taught at the school.

Classes are free.

For more info or to register for any of these classes
call Officer Weaver at 664-6850.

BTW- Leave a message if he isn't available. He will return your call. But warning , if you have a teen, be prepared he begins the conversation with, "Yes Mam, this is officer Weaver of the Alabaster Police Department...."
First my heart stopped. And I then drew in a huge breath, with which I think he knew I was concerned and he interjected, "Everything is ok", to which I replied, "What did he do? Was he in a car accident? IS he ok? What'd he do?"........

Being a mom of a teenage boy, it's tough.....

Anyway, if you live in the Birmingham Area, this is a great class to be involved in. It could save your life! Hope to see you there!

Free Information Calls

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75, or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. I didn't know this...... When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial 1(800) FREE 411, or 1(800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. This works on your home telephone as well!
Tis, true see here:
Click here: Urban Legends Reference Pages: Free 411

5 THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST: EmergencyThe Emergency Number worldwide for Mobiles is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.
SECOND: Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy Someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'rem ote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). (dont know if this is true, but worth a try)
THIRD: Hidden Battery Power Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50%increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.
FOURTH: How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone? To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
AndFinally....FIFTH: Free Directory Service for Cells (see above)
