My Outdoor Wednesday post was taken at Aldridge Gardens in Hoover. I have tried to stay on "track" physically this year with an exercise program. It's been so cold outside that it's hard to get the motivation to walk. But as I walked around the track, I noticed all of the ducks and geese.
How do they do it? How do they stand the cold? I mean, I know it's nature, but I cannot imagine how cold they must be, and yet they were swimming in the water (water with a thin layer of ice, mind you).
And I wondered as I walked, and hoped that you might have the answer for me (forgive my lack of knowledge and expertise in this area). I always heard, there are no dumb questions, so humor me...
Up north, do ducks/geese ever get stuck in ice? True I know it's a good reason that birds fly south in the winter, but surely some ducks and geese stay? And what do they do? Do they swim in the icy waters? Do their feet ever get stuck?

The poor ducks! Did you see
ABC33/40 one day last week with ducks trying to walk around on a pond in Hoover? They were slipping and sliding ... so cute! They're not used to the freezing weather either.
I suddenly feel a little better about my (in desperate need of a pedicure) feet.
I lived in Michigan and the only thing I ever saw stuck in the ice were inanimate objects. (Bags, bottles, sticks, etc) Ducks/Geese unless they will ill or injured wouldn't stay still enough in the water to allow ice to form around them and freeze them in...or so I'm guessing.

It's a very good question, Leigh. Wish I had the answer! I always like to see geese. It reminds me of being a little girl and how excited I'd get to see ducks and geese.
After our last trip to the Jane B Holmes, The Bean BEGGED for me to park in front of the library so she could watch the geese in the field. We sat there for at least 10 minutes (a long time for a 2 year old!) and watched them nibbling tiny pieces of grass. So cool.
Have you ever slept with a nice down feather comforter? Nice and warm!

I've wondered that all my life. My hubby says the water never touches their bodies (something about so many insulating feathers) but...what about their little feet???
