Outdoor Adventures in Mentone (OW)

Outdoor Wednesday is hosted by my friend, Susan of A Southern Daydreamer.

Last weekend I took a girls trip to Mentone, Alabama. On Saturday we (6 of the 9 ladies that went) piled into the van and headed out for a day of adventure. The other three ladies stayed behind at the cabin, finding sitting in front of a roaring fireplace as adventureous as they wanted to get.
For the more adventurous spirits our morning  began with a small stop by Cloudmont Ski & Golf Resort. Two 1,000 foot slopes are available for ski. While we didn't ski, we did enjoy watching skiers take to the slope, and began to plan a future trip with kids in tow to try our hand at the slopes.

From there we took to the trails. As in Hiking.

DeSoto State Park has approximately 15 miles of hiking trails, with 5 miles of mountain biking trails. Terrain on all trails varies from easy to strenuous.

Hiking is my favorite outdoor winter activity. In the south, winters aren't harsh, they are perfect to layer up and hit a hiking trail-worry free from ticks, chiggers and snakes, as you would find in the spring and summer. (BIG SMILE)

I chose one of my favorite trails, The Azalea Cascade Boardwalk Trail in Desoto State Park. This trail features a fantastic boadwalk before the actual trail begins. The Boardwalk is a beautiful place to see Mountain Laurel bloom as well as natural rodidendrum. The Boardwalk is a 360-yard trail that can be enjoyed and traveled by people of all abilities. No matter what the season, the boardwalk gives the hiker a unique perspective of the surrounding habitat. A 20-foot octagon deck at the end of the trail places you over the pool created by the Azalea Cascade. You can see clear down to the bottom of the pool!

After our hike we took in some scenery by the awe inspiring Desoto Falls. The Falls plunges 104 ft into a small gorge, a gorgeous sight! It's a three tiered falls, as seen in these best 2 photographs....

Happy Trails right back at you. I really enjoyed when all of you got underneath a boulder and pretended to lift it. Too cute! What fun you all must have had.

Yes - I found all 6 of you. It looks like such a beautiful place to hike. I'm just a tad bit jealous that you can do that in the winter. :)

Love the pictures. Makes me want to go hiking too. I loved the water fall and have not seen that one. You will have to come sometime and hike Horseshoe Bend Military Park.

What a wonderful trip for all of you. However, I would have been one to stay in by the fire. Looks like you all had a great time.

Mentone was a favorite place to visit when I lived back in Alabama.
Springtime was a favorite for me..especially when the Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and Azaleas were in bloom..at that time, the chiggers, ticks and snakes were unseen due to the still chilly temps..
the falls were truly awesome!
thanks for the beautiful photos and a trip down memory lane..
warm hugs..

What a beautiful place! I will have to tell my mom about this spot. She's the hiker in our family. Love the photos you took of the gals on the rocks. Awww heck - I think all the photos are great. :) (OK, but that last one is very cool!)
