Billy's Seafood in Bon Secour

Billy's Seafood is a place that I have heard talk of for a long time. Locals tout it's quality on local boards and forums in the cyber world (al.com) as well as in the conversations and recommendations of the best place to pick up some really fresh shrimp for a pot of gumbo.

(Royal Reds Shrimp)

"Billy's Seafood" it is, hands down every time. And it's true, you cannot get any fresher than Billy's. Located on a dock in an unassuming shack you will find some of the freshest gulf seafood-just short of catching it yourself. Billy's has numerous varieties, try and stump them with a local request, here's betting that they have it.

(shrimp varieties)
Other than fresh seafood, they have some frozen delights in the form of stews, gumbo, bisque, crab cakes, and the list goes on and on. I picked up two containers of frozen shrimp and crab bisque for Big Daddy. I will make one container for him later this week and give you the seal of approval, should it earn one.
Hungry for some for yourself? You are in luck, Billy's will pack and ship overnight to your door, their freshest seafood. Don't chance buying from the grocery and getting formerly frozen seafood that was caught months ago, more than likely in a mass industry foreign market. If you are in the area of lower Alabama, Billy's is just 5 miles W off of Gulf Shores Parkway between Foley and Gulf Shores.

While you are picking out some fresh ingredients for a good meal, have someone point out to your children, should you be forced to bring them along, the pelicans on the docks and the shrimp boats in wait.

(Stepping onto my soapbox)

Speaking of shrimp boats, with Hurricane season in full swing, the shrimpers are really taking a hit. Hurricanes not only affect the catch of shrimpers, it affects their livelihood. Many shrimpers (old timers that only know to shrimp!) are having to call it quits. Ocean shrimp are extremely resilient to overfishing, and the fishery yields an annual harvest that is in great demand. Shrimp fishermen, entered the 21st century unprepared to survive in a changing global economy. They hadn’t realized fully that anyone who has to catch his shrimp in the ocean is at a distinct comparative disadvantage vis-à-vis foreign competitors who have learned to use modern aquaculture techniques to farm all the shrimp they wish. A flood of cheap farmed imports has simply overwhelmed U.S. shrimpers in the past three years, who now only hold 10-12 percent of the U.S. market. Please-support your local US shrimpers by BUYing LOCAL! Start with Billy's.
