My friend Gina, over at The Shabby Cottage is hosting a carnival, "Crazy about Chalkboards".
My chalkboard plate is one that I shared with you in December of 2008, but I am running this post again for the carnival.
You are invited to attend the carnnival too, just go to The Shabby Cottage and comment on Gina's chalkboard post with your link. Love those chalkboards!
Remember that beautiful plate that I purchased from TJ Maxx for $3.99?
I told you that I had a project planned for it. I thought I would make it into a chalkboard plate. It is easy! You can make one too. I am sure you have a plate that you can use. If not, check TJ Maxx or Marshalls. The plates there are gorgeous! Almost to much to paint over....but at the pricing, who can resist. You can even pick up a plate at a garage sale or while thrifting. I know my local thrift store sells plates for usually about 2 bucks, so you can see that TJ Maxx and Marshalls offer real bargains. And you get what you want.
So....do you have your plate?
Besides the plate, Other supplies you will need are:
- Chalkboard spray paint. Make certain that it says chalkboard. I used black chalkboard spray paint.
- Painters tape
- chalk
Tape off the areas of your plate that you do not want to be black. I like to leave a substantial border so that it "pops" off of the sides.
The square plate that I used was very easy to mark off, but you can use any size or shape of plate.
After taping off the plate, take it outside to begin the painting process. When painting, be certain to not hold the spray nozzle down continually. This will cause to much paint to come out at once, resulting in a running and streaked plate. Just use short quick, blast of paint spray-it will look like a sand or powdered sugar texture when it hits the plate. Think tiny spots.
After you have finished painting, allow the paint to dry completely.
Then remove the tape very gently.
WAH-LA! You have yourself a great chalkboard.
Use it for displaying your dinner menu, to welcome guest, or even to leave family notes....the possibilities are endless!
And you KNOW that I LOVE homemade gifts! It makes a perfect gift!
For ultra coolness....I have seen this same technique used on doors. Think a play room-or my favorite, a pantry! Just tape (for large projects newspaper would work handy) off the inside of a door and t is the perfect place to keep track of grocery list.
Home Decor on a budget! Now that I love!
Head over to Gina's place to see more Chalkboard Post!

Great idea! You are so crafty! This is really a gift idea for next Christmas or Birthday's
Yeah Leigh!!!!
I just did a chalkboard out of an old window with the exact same method! Don't ya love it when great minds think alike?
See, great minds do think alike! I "followed" you earlier! (Oh, from what I can tell we live about an hour apart, too!)
I did this with a charger and I love it!! I really like that plate!
I love this idea, and I could so totally do it! Too bad I didn't see this before I went shopping today... :)
Leigh - I painted a small wall in one of my rental units with chalkboard paint - everyone loves, it - but I love this small, movable piece - How fun!
I have a chalk tip -- Put your chalk in a really wet paper towel or piece of cloth for a few minutes and when the chalk is wet, it glides - it is just so super smooth.
Thanks for the tip! I'm going to do this. I've still got chalkboard paint, too.
Seriously...where do learn these things. I cant keep up. LOVE this!! ~cc

This is the perfect idea for my kitchen!
That plate is ADORABLE!! So funny that you used chalkboard paint---I'm working on a post right now involving chalk board paint. :)
Your plate turned out terriffic. I have added you as a favorite. Thanks for sharing. I did a chalkboard on my door to my laundry room. I had to put up a panel to cover a cat door.
Great idea! It makes me want to go out and buy some chalkboard paint. This would be a great housewarming gift.
Functional and classy. Great idea!
Love it. I've used chalkboard paint on a cabinet so my kids can draw on it, but never on a plate. I want to make one right away.
Super cute! Great idea!
Love it!
Leigh.. it's to cute. Love the plate..gotta head out to TJ's and pick me up a few.
Thanks for sharing.
Hugs,
Debbie
I remember this chalk board from "then" and I still think it's cool "now."
Great idea. Hang the plate in the kitchen and presto....grocery list. If I don't write it down when I think of it, it goes off to outer space. I'll be making one of these soon!
Smiles,
Pat
Super cute!
What a pretty and inexpensive plate! It would certainly be an awesome gift to someone. Great job!! TFS!
Great idea to use that plate.Blessings,

So cute - I have been planning on doing my pantry door for months. I have everything bought...just need to do it. Thanks for the reminder. :)
This turned out beautiful! Black and white is the perfect combination!
great plate, come over to my blog tomorrow to see what I did with a plate!
Hi Leigh.
Your plate looks fantastic, of course! I love the detail on that plate.
Sorry I haven't been around for a couple of weeks. It's been crazy around here. School ended and now the kids are running amuck all day long! Aahhh!
*Tricia
Loved it then, love it now!
I'm pretty sure our chalkboards are how we became "frans." What better way to celebrate it than with a party? Thanks sooooo much for joining in!
Hi Leigh! I commented in march when you had this up, but I had to comment again...that plate is so pretty and I know I would never use it as a plate, but I'd use it all the time as a chalkboard! So clever :)
Hello Leigh - love your chalkboard pla†e! I'm excited to try that. And what a great idea to give as gifts.
Blessings,
Marie

That is so cool! Thanks for the tute! Your new chalkboard is gorgeous! I LOVE the little easel you have it on, too! :)
Thank you for the step by step demo...it turned out LOVELY! I really want to do this project now. :D
Beautiful plate, great idea! Love the detail. I haven't used spray chalkboard paint yet but after browsing around the Chalkboard carnival, I definitely want to give it a try : )
I love it! Thanks for the tutorial!
Brenda
I thought I was savvy and yet, I did not know that chalk board paint came in spray paint. thanks for the info and I adore you plate!
Cute, cute, cute!!!!
I love it!
Love this idea! I must make a quick trip to Wally-world for a can of paint!
Now that my son's are older and one has moved out I should try this again. When we had the whiteboard up in the kitchen years ago for the notes and reminders they would write the goofiest stuff on the board every day. The word fart is only funny once and only when they are 6 years old and you are glad they didn't spell it firt this time.
I have seen many chalkboard plates, but girlfriend...yours takes the cake! It is gorgeous. To.Die.For. Thank you TJ Maxx for offering up such fabulous deals! I love me some TJ Maxx and Marshalls..oh, and Ross!
Have a Great Weekend
~Amanda
I remember this, that is so cool! Thanks for stopping by, its great to hear from ya! Hope your weekend is going great!
Wow, that is fabulous. The detailing on the plate makes it just all the more wonderful.
Catching up again. Summer has been so busy. Hope to make it to your Thrifty Thursday this week. ; )
Love, love, love this idea!! Gotta try it. Thanks
Hugs!
