Sunflower Promises

Big Daddy brought home to me some flowers the other day, sunflowers. I had the perfect vase to put them in. The sunflower bucket. The bucket came directly from Hurricane Katrina. It was in this pile of debris...
My family and I went to Gulfport, MS. to offer aide in whatever way we could, two days after Hurricane Katrina blasted through. What was once the lives of people now littered the roads. People's treasured possessions, now cast offs. Long story short, The bucket was in the debris. It's owner gave it to me. She wanted nothing, absolutely nothing to do with anything that Katrina had touched. I accepted the bucket. To me, it is a reminder of new beginnings. That life goes on. Much like the survivors of Katrina. To me, it is special. It survived. I know it takes time. But time does heal.
And so, my special bucket of sunflowers.....
A little fact about sunflowers, that I found to be interesting, is that they turn their 'heads' to follow the sun. Thus the name, sunflowers. Today I came across this oh, so poignant quote that reveals some beautiful symbolism between ourselves and sunflowers as well as the important significance of joy (I thought this is very appropriate for Katrina's survivors, and the survivors of any circumstance):
"Turn your face to the sun and the shadows follow behind you." ~ Maori Proverb
Life is a blessing. May you find the sun today and in all your days!

Honey, you are one of the most interesting ladies that I "know". Your perspective on things is just wonderful and you live an adventurous and 'open to the possibilities' life. So glad that I can claim you as a friend.

This was just a beautiful post.

Sunflowers are my favorites, and its a nice way to pay homage to the survivors...hopefully the area grows back, high and tall, in the sun. Heading down there in September...

I have to agree with the first post from Jen, you are a very amazing lady and when I read your posts it makes me smile and makes me want to get off my a** and do more. You give me so much motivation and make me feel so much better about things going on in my life just through your words in you blog... I hope that we get to catch up with each other here very soon!! Hope to see you Friday night. We will have to stick together..

Kristy-I appreciate that. You are sooo sweet. And I dont think for a minute that you are NOT a go getter. YOU ARE! Any mom who works and raises a family, involved in afterschool activities IS a full time job. I could do more and I need to with my free time. I need to be more disiplined. I appreciate your kindness words though. You always make me feel good.
Yes, indeed you will have to stick by me!

Awesome inspiring post! Good on you for helping out the DESERVING hard-working folks of SoMiss.

I went with my Church to help too. But we had to stay in Philadelphia for the first 4 days. They got hit fairly hard too. But the inspiring thing was the people FROM that area who were volunteering to help the people further South who were worse off.
