I had to post this sign under, "Things that make you go hmmm". Family friend, Dullbert sent this to me today. It gave me a laugh and much to think about. What the heck is "sour dirt and souse meat"?
This from Dullbert..
"...Don't know why I thought you might find this interesting but I've noticed on your blog you are fond of photography and recipes. If you ever get a recipe that calls for dirt I've got the place for you. Occasionally when I have to detour off of I-59 on the way home from Fairfield I pass this place. I was always fascinated by this sign so one morning I brought the camera."

OMG I think I know exactly where that is!
Sour dirt?????
I know, what the heck is that?
My grandmother used to make souse. It was also called hog's head cheese. So I'm guessing that souse meat comes out of the head of a pig. What do you think?
Wow. Yikes. That's pretty disgusting. :)
Wow. They even accept WIC! Granted I'm pretty sure there is nothing on that sign that would be covered by WIC LOL
Hmmm, sour dirt, that's a new one on me. Souse meat is though, I think, the same as head cheese which is made of (it's gross but...)brains. Bleck!
Anyway, love your post. That sign is totally an Alabama eccentricity!
Found you via AL Bloggers.
