................................................One of my dear friends, Deborah Hembree moved away last May. She moved to Eclectic, Alabama. "Why", you might ask, "does one move to Eclectic?". Deborah moved and bought a restaurant, Olde South Cafe. Today, my friend Janet and I drove an hour and a half to Eclectic for our first dining experience at Olde South.
Deborah met us upon entering the cafe. The cafe itself is small & quaint and if walls could talk, I am sure it could tell some tales. Deborah introduced us to all her staff, which all seemed very nice, as well as all of her regular customers-which were plentiful. It was obvious by the lunch crowd and the first name basis with her customers, that Deborah has made Olde South into a great hometown atmosphere where locals like to come in for a good meal and a story and a laugh. Deborah showed us around the restaurant and gave Janet and I each an Olde South Cafe t-shirt (nice colored-t-shirts , hats and totes are available for purchase. T-shirts are $10.00). After the tour, I was anxious to try the food. Patsy, our wonderful waitress, brought over some fried green tomatoes ($1.95 small, $2.95 large) for starters with some sweet tea. I have to be honest and tell you that these were hands down, the best fried green tomatoes I have ever had. They were perfectly seasoned and crispy. To tell you how good they were, I ordered a small order to take with home with me. The tea was a wonderful as well, perfectly sweet to quench any true southerner's thirst. After a couple fried green tomatoes, Janet, Deborah and I headed for the buffet bar. The bar had a variety of dishes on it: creamed corn, green beans, black eyed peas, homemade mashed potatoes, marinated cucumber's, slaw, peach cobbler, chocolate pudding, meatloaf, fried chicken, chicken dressing, rice, gravy and cornbread and rolls, to name a few. The buffet cost a very reasonable $7.00. For dessert I had the specialty, Momma Jo Ann's pound cake for $1.95. The cake is homemade (as all of the cakes there are) using Deborah's mother's family recipe. It was so moist and delicious and the perfect ending to our feast at Olde South and our long overdue visit with our friend, Deborah. Take a drive to Eclectic for a meal that will be unforgetable.
